United States History, Geography, and Government
We read a lot of biographies and historical fiction. I have many of the ones we read listed on my reading list and on my Homeschooling During the Primary Years page. In addition to reading, we have learned a lot from listening to old time radio shows. I have compiled a list of favorite audio here.
To learn the geography of the USA, we did puzzles of the United States and Internet matching games several times a week for a few minutes each time. My youngest child learned all the states capitals in a few weeks that way. Next she learned the presidents the same way. She can name all the U.S. presidents in order which is pretty impressive but she learned it without studying, just by playing this game. We also enjoyed looking through
United States Of America, A State-by-state Guide
You could also make your own version! We also discovered some wonderful read aloud story books that highlight geography by author
Holling Clancy Holling
that I highly recommend for about ages 8 and up.
The
National Center for Constitutional Studies has curriculum materials for all ages. If you are looking for a comprehensive American Government curriculum for high school students, I recommend
Part One and Part Two from NCCS. It includes video lessons, textbook, curriculum guide and tests.
Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? is a great introduction to economics. For younger children, Take Your Hat Off When the Flag Goes By is a long time favorite in our home.
