Scriptures About Education
Proverbs 1:5, 8
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: ...My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.
2 Nephi 4:15
And upon these I write the things of my soul, and many of the scriptures which are engraven upon the plates of brass. For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children.
2 Nephi 9:28-29
O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men!
When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God,
for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is
foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish. But to be learned is good if they hearken
unto the counsels of God.
2 Nephi 28:12-14, 31
Because of pride, and because of false teachers, and false doctrine, their churches have become corrupted,
and their churches are lifted up; because of pride they are puffed up. They rob the poor because of their
fine sanctuaries; they rob the poor because of their fine clothing; and they persecute the meek and the
poor in heart, because in their pride they are puffed up. They wear stiff necks and high heads; yea, and
because of pride, and wickedness, and abominations, and whoredoms, they have all gone astray save it be
a few, who are the humble followers of Christ; nevertheless, they are led, that in many instances they do
err because they are taught by the precepts of men...Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man, or maketh
flesh his arm, or shall hearken unto the precepts of men, save their precepts shall be given by the power of
the Holy Ghost.
And also trust no one to be your teacher nor your minister, except he be a man of God, walking in his
ways and keeping his commandments.
And it came to pass that Amulon did gain favor in the eyes of the king of the Lamanites; therefore, the
king of the Lamanites granted unto him and his brethren that they should be appointed teachers over his
people, yea, even over the people who were in the land of Shemlon, and in the land of Shilom, and in the
land of Amulon. For the Lamanites had taken possession of all these lands; therefore, the king of the Lamanites had appointed kings over all these lands. And now the name of the king of the Lamanites was Laman, being called after the name of his father; and therefore he was called king Laman. And he was king over a numerous people. And he appointed teachers of the brethren of Amulon in every land which was possessed by his people; and thus the language of Nephi began to be taught among all the people of the Lamanites. And they were a people friendly one with another; nevertheless they knew not God; neither did the brethren of Amulon teach them anything concerning the Lord their God, neither the law of Moses; nor did they teach them the words of Abinadi; But they taught them that they should keep their record, and that they might write one to another. And thus the Lamanites began to increase in riches, and began to trade one with another and wax great, and began to be a cunning and a wise people, as to the wisdom of the world, yea, a very cunning people, delighting in all manner of wickedness and plunder, except it were among their own brethren.
And when the priests left their labor to impart the word of God unto the people, the people also left their labors to hear the word of God. And when the priest had imparted unto them the word of God they all returned again diligently unto their labors; and the priest, not esteeming himself above his hearers, for the preacher was no better than the hearer, neither was the teacher any better than the learner; and thus they were all equal, and they did all labor, every man according to his strength.
3 Nephi 22:13
Wherefore, take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or that which is good and of God to be of the devil. For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night.
For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God. But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him.
Doctrine and Covenants 88:78-80, 118-119
Teach ye diligently and my grace shall attend you, that you may be instructed more perfectly in theory, in principle, in doctrine, in the law of the gospel, in all things that pertain unto the kingdom of God, that are expedient for you to understand; Of things both in heaven and in the earth, and under the earth; things which have been, things which are, things which must shortly come to pass; things which are at home, things which are abroad; the wars and the perplexities of the nations, and the judgments which are on the land; and a knowledge also of countries and of kingdoms—
That ye may be prepared in all things when I shall send you again to magnify the calling whereunto I have called you, and the mission with which I have commissioned you... And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith. Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;
Doctrine and Covenants 93:39-40, 42
And that wicked one cometh and taketh away light and truth, through disobedience, from the children of men, and because of the tradition of their fathers. But I have commanded you to bring up your children in light and truth... You have not taught your children light and truth, according to the commandments; and that wicked one hath power, as yet, over you, and this is the cause of your affliction.
And a book of remembrance was kept, in the which was recorded, in the language of Adam, for it was given unto as many as called upon God to write by the spirit of inspiration; And by them their children were taught to read and write, having a language which was pure and undefiled.
